Insect repellent line

Here on Saba we are blessed with few mosquitoes in comparison to our neighboring islands. However, we do have some. The Bug Off! Line contains strong essential oils to repel bugs and mosquitoes while you are out and about discovering the island or just being or working outside or in a confined space.

The insect repellent line includes

  • 30% essential oil spray – with alcohol free witch hazel and coconut oil

  • 3-5% essential oil in a goat’s milk cream for everyday use

  • Bug Off! Essential oil candle.

All natural soy & Coconut candles

100% soy wax is used as well as 100% coconut wax when making candles here on Saba. They are fragranced with essential oils for their therapeutic, medicinal, and homeopathic uses.

These candles, when colored, are colored with herbs such as comfrey, rose hips powder, peppermint, lavender, madder root powder, alkanet root powder, annatto seeds, spirulina powder and natural oxides etc. it's a process but very worth while doing!

I also make 100% soy wax candles with a mixture of essential and skin safe fragrance oils for special occasions such as Christmas. These candles can also be colored with herbs as well as liquid candle colors.

All candles are hand poured in limited quantities and in reusable and recyclable containers.

Diffusers

The diffusers come in 4 oz fragrance solutions with added essential oils with reeds.

Soaps

My bar and liquid soaps contain three or more of the following ingredients: goats milk, coconut oil, olive oil, local aloe vera gel, jojoba oil, argan oil, sweet almond oil, shea butter, hemp seed oil, grape seed oil, sunflower oil, apricot seed oil, castor oil and/or wheat germ oil, pure clays, Saban sea salt, other pure salts, active coconut charcoal, algae, vitamins as well as pure essential oils.

Soap bars come in 2 – 5,5 oz sizes.  Keep them dry between uses. Liquid soap comes in 4 and 8 oz bottles. A little goes a LONG way! All soaps are labelled with their ingredients and essential oils.

Depending in season, different types of herbal and aromatic soaps will be available. Some classic versions will of course always be in stock, as well as a unisex line of products.

Some of my base soap that I always make since I love them are: Shaving Soap, Men's and Women's Hemp Soap, Pure Coconut Soap, Saban Fruit Soap, Lavender Soap, Sandalwood and Patchouli Soap. Many of these scents can also be found in my candles and creams.

Unisex Line

Unisex scented products  can be combined with any of the other products or by themselves. They work for both men and women as well as children.

Sensitive skin line

Children, people with sensitive skin have the option of the fragrance free products. Pure Olive Oil Castile soap is a good example of a product that can be used for almost any cleaning activity: soap, shampoo, household cleaning, pet care etc.

Children

Children have sensitive skin. Therefore products containing essential oils should be tested first. The Bug Off spray may not be used on children under 3 years old since it contains 30% essential oils. Castile soap and baby lotions and cleansers are specifically made for their young skin.

Skin Conditions

Saban Rock Living makes products for different skin conditions. The most popular being lotion for sun damaged skin. Also the body butter is very good for extremely dry skin areas. Copaiba oil and medicinal grade Manuka honey and oil are added to many of these products.

New all natural soaps

Saban Rock Living makes many kinds of soaps depending on what’s in season and what needs our skin has depending on season.

Creams, lotions, cleansers, oils, hair products

The skin is our largest and most vulnerable organ, so it could use all the support it can get. Skin is our natural barrier to the outside world and provides us with protection against UV radiation, chemicals in our food supply, bacteria and other germs, and environmental pollutants.

All the “stress” that our bodies deal with every day, both internally and externally, show up on our skin in the form of aging, puffiness, infections, inflammation, and sensitivities. That’s why we rely on eating and using natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to help curb inflamed and diseased cells.

Herbal plant therapies for skin disorders have been used for thousands of years, and today, many traditional herbs are being reintroduced, studied extensively, and experiencing a resurgence in popularity since many chemical treatments don’t always work or have harsh side effects. As the authors of the book “Herbal Medicine: Biomolecular and Clinical Aspects” point out, increasingly many people are turning to the use of herbs for the following reasons: the side effects of chemical drugs, wanting to return to nature, being a part of the green revolution, and wanting to use more organic and safe products.[1]

My creams, lotions, oil, and sticks contain some of the following ingredients: shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil, local Aloe Vera, jojoba oil, argan oil, sweet almond oil, sunflower oil, hemp seed oil, grape seed oil, carrot seed oil, raspberry seed oil, zinc oxides, algae, natural vitamins, natural preservatives, witch hazel, beeswax, and pure essential oils. Shelf-life approx. 6 months.

Creams and lotions

All Natural sunscreen 7-10 SPF

This amazing sunscreen contains 50% pure Saban Aloe Vera for moisture and healing of the skin, 38% organic Shea Butter for aiding dry skin, Zinc Oxide[2], organic Raspberry Seed Oil (natural SPF between 25-50), organic Carrot Seed Oil (natural SPF of 38-40), vitamin A and Sorbic Acid as a preservative[3]. Since Carrot Seed Oil has a strong scent and can be overpowering, have added organic essential oil which the skin loves as well.

Some interesting information about natural sunscreens[4]

SPF means sun protection factor. The higher the sun protection factor, the longer you can stay in the sun. Here is the equation to figure out how long you can stay in the sun based on the SPF number you are using:

  • Minutes to burn without sunscreen x SPF number = maximum sun exposure time

I usually burn in the sun after 30 minutes and I have a SPF of 4 on. Well that would mean that I would be protected in the sun for 120 minutes wearing the SPF of 4.

Oils with a natural SPF

  • Carrot Seed Oil- SPF 38-40 (very strong scent)

  • Raspberry Seed Oil- SPF 25-50

  • Wheat Germ Oil- SPF 20

  • Avocado Oil- SPF 4-15

  • Coconut Oil- SPF 2-8

  • Olive Oil- SPF 2-8

  • Macadamia Nut Oil- SPF 6

  • Almond Oil- SPF 5

  • Shea Butter- SPF 3-6

  • Jojoba Oil- SPF 4

These essential oils also have a natural SPF:

  • Lavender

  • Myrrh

  • Roman Chamomile

To assure protection, I add zinc oxide powder. Non nano particles are bigger than 100 nanometers and do not penetrate the skin.

Apply as needed, for strong protection only apply and rub it and and let it be white on your skin, for everyday use rub it in so it penetrates more and is invisible. Re-apply every 1-2 hours depending on activity etc.

Lotion bar stick for very dry skin

For very skin areas organic mango butter and coconut oil push moisture into your skin. It is used for specific dry areas. The tubes make it easy to apply on children and babies. There is no sunscreen but they do have a natural SPF of about 5. In warm weather, keep them in the fridge.

Lip balm magic

The combination of shea butter, sweet almond oil, beeswax, and raspberry seed oil for sunscreen, leaves you lips soft and moist.

Anti-wrinkle eye stick

Buttery smooth texture is easy to apply while being ultra gentle on delicate tissue. It tightens delicate skin, reduces puffy eyes, hydrate cells and encourage collagen production.  Carrot seed oil contains large amounts of antioxidants, vitamin C and K. These components help protect against stress, UV-rays and pollution. Carotenoids have been found to enhance the body's immune response to UV rays which can decrease skin damage from UV exposure. It is healing and rejuvenates skin cells. Carrot seed oil also helps to balance the skin; it will not clog pores and will moisturizer edgy skin.

Loving hair products

Everyday shampoo

Mild and gentle, essential oil and vitamin enriched shampoo for everyday use, all hair types. The sudsing action is rich & creamy, making it extra kind to your scalp and hair with the right pH level. And of course, it contains no sulfates, alcohol, parabens, gluten, or phthalates.  The suds-ing action is rich & creamy, making it extra kind to your scalp and hair. The texture is close to a store-bought product, as far as thickness goes. It has good body, and will not slip thru your fingers like some natural shampoos do. Because of the ingredients, I use, the "color" is translucent, meaning its somewhat see thru. Its pH balanced to 5.5 for those of you who are concerned about pH levels.

Hair conditioner

This extra rich hair conditioner is made from naturally derived ingredients and as many organic ingredients as possible.

It can be used as a rinse out conditioner or a leave-in conditioner for most hair types. Those with thin, fine hair probably should use this as a normal rinse out product. As a leave in: just remember a little will go a long way! A secret…. this product is so amazing it can be used as a hair conditioner and body lotion!

Saban Banana and coconut Milk Shampoo BAR

This all natural shampoo bar has Saban bananas, eggs, coconut milk & lemongrass distillate! Everything grown and made here on Saba! Saban chickens run free and lay very protein rich eggs!

The shampoo bar is very simple to use; just lather hair & rinse. Make sure to keep the bar dry between uses, since it prolongs the bar life.

If you have never used a shampoo bar, your hair might go through a transitional period. Store-bought shampoo strips away natural oil and leaves residue in your hair. To compensate for this loss, your scalp has been working overtime to crank up oil production. As this shampoo bar, will not strip your natural oil, when you first begin using the shampoo bar, you might notice that your hair appears more oily and greasy. Give yourself and your hair at least 2 weeks to get rid of the store-bought shampoo residue and to adjust to the shampoo bar. After this transitional period, you will wonder why you’ve been using store-bought shampoo as long as you have.

You may like to use an apple cider vinegar rinse after shampooing their hair with an all natural shampoo bar. To make your own apple cider vinegar rinse, mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into 1 cup of warm filtered tap water. Use it to rinse your hair after shampooing.

Scrubs / Bath Salts

Saban orange and mint walnut scrub with AHA

Saban orange, Saban mint and finely ground walnut shells are a recipe for exfoliating and revealing younger looking skin. I have added AHA for exfoliation and skin firmness.

AHA - Alpha hydroxy acids - How does it work? Alpha hydroxy acids seem to work by removing the top layers of dead skin cells. They can also increase the thickness of deeper layers of skin, promoting firmness)

Directions for use in shower or bath: Scoop between fingers and apply to wet skin and gently massage in a circular motion, focusing on rough areas. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry.

WARNINGS: Avoid use on any cuts or delicate areas. Do not exfoliate if skin is sunburned or irritated for any reason. Avoid using all body polishes on the face.

Insect repellent spray with 30% essential oils!

Zika virus is transmitted primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (aegypti and albopictus). These are the same mosquitoes that spread dengue and chikungunya viruses.

Test on small area first!   Not for children under 5!   Shake well before use!

Furry Friends line

Paraben free and biodegradable and pH-balanced for our beloved pets fur coats and skin! Shampoo, conditioner, and a conditioning leave in spray. A calming spray for times when a little soothing is needed.

Saban Sea Salt

My Saban Sea Salt is made using the salt extracted from Saba’s desalination plant. This is the essenes of Re-Use, Re-Purpose and Recycle! Since Saba does not have a natural water source except for rainwater collection on our roofs, we have desalination plants that supply the water. The salt water extracted from this process I use to make Saban Sea Salt. The salt is also used in the well-being products as well as used in our cooking. It is very salty, so a little goes a long way!

Teas

All teas have an organic tea leaf base except for the purely herbal teas, that are made with Saban grown herbs and fruits. The teas are infused with fruits and herbs grown here in Saba as well as ingredients processed here on Saba. Most teas have 2 brews in one scoop, and some even have 3 brews. All teas can be served hot and cold.

Saban Bush Tea, made from what was available in the old gardens, a step away from the kitchen door, could consist of only one ingredient e.g. basil or mint or a variety of herbs such as Cinnamon Bush, Garden Balmsam, Guavaberry, Lemongrass, Lion’s tail, Mauby Tree Bark, Stingy Thyme and Vervain according to Suzanne Nielsen in her book “Folk Remedies on a Caribbean Island” from 2007. Saban Rock Living has made its own version of Saban Bush Tea combining local ingredients to an amazingly refreshing tea served hot or cold.

The teas I make depend on season and availability to local ingredients.
